Why is there so much water in cosmetics?
The majority of water-based skincare products (creams, serums, lotions, gels) often contain between 60 and 80% water.
Water is used as a solvent: it allows certain ingredients to dissolve and to obtain a fluid texture.
But there is also another reality: water is the least expensive ingredient in the cosmetics industry.
That's why many formulas contain a very large amount of it: it's economical ... but not necessarily beneficial for your skin.
Result :
Much of what you apply is made up of an ingredient that does not provide any direct active benefit , and you are often paying more for the marketing than the formula itself.
Water isn't bad… but it doesn't provide any active benefits.
Water is neutral.
It serves as a carrier for the ingredients, but does not act on the quality or condition of the skin.
In many formulas, this means:
-
-
a significant space occupied by an inert ingredient
-
a low concentration of actually active ingredients
-
It is therefore not surprising that more and more people are seeking care:
-
-
more concentrated
-
more functional
-
and truly effective
-
What is a hydrosol?
A hydrosol (also called floral water) is obtained during the steam distillation of a plant.
During this process:
-
-
the concentrated phase yields the essential oil
-
the aqueous phase becomes the hydrosol
-
This plant-based water naturally contains:
-
-
water-soluble active molecules
-
aromatic compounds
-
minerals
-
specific properties depending on the plant
-
Unlike purified water, a hydrosol is not neutral: it already provides beneficial compounds to the skin.
Why use hydrosols instead of water?
Using a hydrosol as the base of a skincare product is a simple choice: that the base itself already provides something to the skin.
A hydrosol:
-
-
it brings properties specific to the plant from which it originates
-
contributes to the overall effectiveness of the formula
-
is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin
-
allows for limiting the addition of perfumes
-
It's a more coherent, more qualitative and more results-oriented approach.
